Moonlight Masquerade
Remember your own prom? The thrill of selecting the perfect dress/outfit, having a chance to experience a magical evening…hair, make up, and fun with friends? Perhaps you were fortunate enough to attend a fully inclusive school, where everyone in your school felt welcome, but I’m betting that generally kids with special needs – those with developmental cognitive disabilities – were not at your event. Our idea behind this grant request is to simply make one night as special for teens and young adults with disabilities, as proms or other school dances are for typical peers. Westonwood Ranch provides trained certified staff at the event, food, beverages, and the DJ, Photographer and Venue donates their service in kind. This event empowers these incredible young people to grow their self confidence and self esteem.
It is about providing an opportunity for teenagers to celebrate with people who accept them for who they are. Many teenagers and young adults with disabilities are outsider observers of school culture and never have the opportunity to attend a school dance or prom. School dances are some of the most significant moments in a teenager's life, but not every kid gets to experience the dance of their dreams.
